I Need A Sign!

I need a sign, like an actual sign. A No Soliciting sign.

I usually try to avoid solicitors because I’m not great with being assertive. I’m not exactly the type to invite the vacuum salesperson into the house or anything, but it’s hard for me to say no without at least giving them a chance to give their pitch. The guy who came to our house today was tricky though. I saw him through the glass pane on the front door and he was holding a clipboard. I thought I had to sign for some kind of exciting delivery but when I opened the door, I was met by a guy from Comcast. Thankfully, Brady can’t read yet because his shirt read Xfinity and every time Brady hears those commercials, he asks me to switch internet providers.

I knew right away that I wasn’t going to buy what the guy was selling. I’m cheap, but there is no price low enough for me to invite the cable company into my house for 4-6 hours for a new installation. Been there, done that. Plus, I have all the kid channels memorized and that comes in handy when Brady hits the ground running, and I’m only half awake, at 5:30 am.

He started into his spiel, and I listened politely. I really wanted to cut him off because I had dinner about to boil over on the stove, but I didn’t. I respect the dude. He’s out there working for a living. It’s not a glamorous job and I’m sure he’s had a few doors slammed in his face and been on the receiving end of more than one verbal lashing. I’ve worked a lot of customer service jobs (ice cream place, food service, lawn sprinkler company, print and mail house, shoe store), and I know how it feels for people to treat you poorly.

I asked Mark to come to the door to talk to the guy, but he refused (smart!). I was forced to stop the guy because dinner really was about to boil over. He said he’d come back another time, but I could see the rejection in his face.

After he left, I was left to ponder what’s worse: letting him go on and on and waste his time when I know I’m not going to earn him a dime, or cutting him off right from the get go without giving him a chance to try/practice. I decided to go with what works for me: avoidance. A No Soliciting sign it is then, because that’s how I roll.

About jillo31

I always wanted to write the great American novel. I've come to the realization that that may not happen. Instead, I'm going to write about my life as a working mom to three boys. I figure in ten years, I won't remember what these days are like. I want to record my everyday victories and struggles.

  1. This kind of thing happens to me all the time! So awkward.

My friend actually put up a hand made sign that says “DO NOT RING BELL!!! The baby is sleeping (finally).” It’s pretty awesome.
